Most of our LED neon signs are available in two power versions: USB and electrical (a standard wall plug with a low-voltage adapter). Both use the same LED technology and draw only about 3 watts, so the choice is not about performance — it is about where the sign will live and what power source is nearby.

USB vs plug-in at a glance

  USB version Plug-in version
Power source Any USB port: computer, TV, power bank, car, USB wall charger Standard wall outlet via low-voltage adapter (110–240 V compatible)
Placement Very flexible — moves with you Best for a permanent spot near an outlet
Best for Desk setups, shelves, kids' rooms, renters, gifts Home bars, garages, man caves, signs that stay on for hours

When should you choose the USB version?

Choose USB when flexibility matters more than a fixed spot. A USB sign can run off the port on the back of a TV or monitor, a USB wall charger, or even a power bank — which means you can hang it where there is no outlet at all. It is the natural pick for desk and gaming setups, dorm rooms, and gifts, because the recipient will always have some way to power it. It also pairs well with our 3D LED night lights, which live on nightstands and desks for the same reason.

When should you choose the plug-in version?

Choose electrical when the sign has a permanent home — above a home bar, on a garage wall, in a man cave. A wall adapter provides steady power for signs that stay lit all evening, with no cable running to a computer or charger. The adapter works on 110–240 V mains, and the sign itself runs on low voltage — more on that in our safety guide.

Do USB and plug-in signs differ in brightness or lifespan?

No meaningful difference: both versions light the same engraved acrylic panel with the same class of LEDs, rated for around 100,000 hours of use (see how long LED neon signs last). Power draw is about 3 watts either way — a fraction of a regular light bulb.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a USB sign with a wall outlet?

Yes — any standard USB wall charger (the kind used for phones) turns an outlet into a USB port for your sign.

Can I run a sign in my car or camper?

The USB version can run from a car's USB port or a power bank, which makes it the right pick for campers, trucks and mobile setups.

What about the color options?

Both power versions come with the same color choices: seven single-color options, or a multicolor remote version with 20 static colors and 19 dynamic modes.
