Both are called "neon," but they are different technologies. Glass neon is the century-old original: glass tubes bent by hand, filled with neon or argon gas, driven by a high-voltage transformer. LED neon — what we make — replaces all of that with a laser-engraved acrylic panel edge-lit by low-voltage LEDs. Here is how the two compare where it actually matters.
| LED neon (acrylic) | Glass neon | |
|---|---|---|
| How it lights | LEDs edge-light an engraved panel | Electrified gas glows inside a tube |
| Voltage | Low voltage — USB or small adapter | High-voltage transformer |
| Power draw | ~3 watts | Tens of watts, transformer runs warm |
| Durability | Solid acrylic — no gas, no fragile tube | Hand-bent glass; breakable, repairable only by specialists |
| Lifespan | LEDs rated ~100,000 hours | Years, with dimming gas and transformer wear |
| Colors | 7 static or 20-color remote on one sign | One color per gas/phosphor — fixed at manufacture |
| Typical cost | A fraction of glass — made on demand | Hand-crafted; typically several times the price |
Honesty matters in a comparison: hand-bent glass has a continuous, rounded tube glow that purists love, and for landmark storefront signage the craft itself is the point. If you are commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece of sign art and the budget matches, glass is a legitimate choice.
For a home bar, a bedroom or a garage, the practical arguments stack up on the LED side: safe to touch and cool-running (no high voltage in a living space — see our safety guide), cheap to run (~a dollar a year at typical use), color-flexible (change the color with a remote instead of buying a new sign), shippable and hangable like a picture frame, and affordable enough to theme a whole wall — a beer sign, a team logo and a movie piece together for less than one glass tube sign.
It glows brightly with crisp contours; the look is engraved-line glow rather than a continuous tube. Most buyers choose it for exactly that clean, detailed rendering of logos and artwork — detail that bent glass physically cannot reproduce.
LED, and it is not close — the full math is in how long do LED neon signs last.
If it can be drawn, it can be engraved — from our catalog of licensed and classic designs to your own custom artwork, in three sizes (size guide here).
